A Little Wind Goes a Long Way
July 3, 2008
Got out on Lake Bemidji yesterday in some real windy conditions. It was a good 25mph, sustained, out of the north. I took a kayak out and surfed some waves for a while. It was like riding a rocket. I couldn’t help whooping and hollering as the waves ripped me faster than I’ve ever gone in a paddle driven craft before.
The best part was, I managed to keep upright the entire time which isn’t too bad for a guy who doesn’t have a lot of time in a kayak under his belt. I wanted to practice some solo rescues since that was the roughest water I’ve ever been out in, but I was pretty bushed by the time I got done playing. Paddling back to the boat house, the waves crashed over the bow, and every time I slid down into the trough of a wave and popped back up, I couldn’t help but think, “This is why I do what I do.”
